Exemption process for Macau residents to enter Zhuhai suspended due to flood of applications

Applications for Macau residents to enter Zhuhai without undergoing the mandatory 14-day quarantine normally imposed by mainland authorities have been suspended after more than 7,000 people applied on the first day – seven times above the allowed daily quota of 1,000.

The new policy was announced last Thursday but suspended on Sunday with the Macau government requiring more time to screen and approve applications. The application process will resume after current applications have been processed.

The Zhuhai government announced further details about the exemption policy on Monday. Despite limiting the exemption quota to 1,000 each day, those exempted Macau residents must enter Zhuhai via ports at Hengqin and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, but not the Gongbei border gate. The exemption qualification is only effective for seven days, and those allowed to enter must stay in Zhuhai city.

The exemption is currently only being applied for business purposes and “special reasons” with eligible residents required to undergo COVID-19 virus tests and receive a “green health code” before they are allowed entry into Zhuhai.
